Batak music is the traditional folk music of the Batak ethnic group, who live in the northern part of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. This music is not a mass commercial genre in the Western sense, but it occupies an important place in the cultural identity of the Batak people. It is used in rituals and celebrations and is perceived as a significant element of their heritage. In the Indonesian musical landscape, traditional genres from the Sumatra region, including Batak musical practices, complement popular trends (dangdut, pop, jazz, etc.) and are also used in ethnic music projects and festivals.
In earlier times, Batak music was listened to during ceremonies (rituals, funerals, dances), holidays, and rituals, where it accompanied traditional dances and expressed social and spiritual meanings. With the advent of sound recording in the 20th century, folk recordings of Batak folk music began to be published on labels specializing in ethnic music and featured at ethnic festivals, which contributed to its spread beyond the region.
In terms of recognition, Batak music has gained respect as part of Indonesia's cultural heritage and as a subject of ethnomusicological research and festivals. Although it does not dominate the commercial charts on a global scale, recordings of traditional Batak music are included in the catalogs of museums, archives, ethnomusic labels, and world music festivals. Batak folk groups participate in music festivals in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, where such music is perceived as culturally significant. Within Indonesia, some “Batak-style” songs may appear on radio stations specializing in regional music. Ethnomusic magazines and research publications recognize Batak music as one of the most complex in terms of rhythm and instrumental structure among the traditions of the Sumatra region.
