Noise, light, shiny people - it's as if everything is against me. Smiles are louder than music, and eyes are glued to every "who's with whom" and "who's cooler." The air clings to your skin like other people's expectations, and even the gin in your glass doesn't save you from the feeling that you've ended up at the wrong party. But somewhere between a nervous laugh and tired politeness, something suddenly appears that makes it all worth enduring - one of your hands in the other. A simple "I'm here" turns out to be louder than any party. And suddenly it feels quieter.
