Description
It sounds as if the heavy air of the mines still hangs in the lungs - even if you've never gone underground yourself. Here, pain is compared to legends of black lungs, and weakness is compared to something shameful, “unmanly.” The bitterness comes from the fact that real fatigue and fear are devalued by the phrase “you'll survive.” An ironic ballad about how old ghosts of soot can suffocate more than any dust.
