It all sounds as if growing up took him by surprise and, instead of wisdom, brought sarcasm, nervous laughter, and a feeling of “enough already.” The words are repeated like a mantra that you don't believe in, but you repeat anyway to stay afloat. There is fatigue, anger, and a kind of touching honesty in this: growing old is scary, but pretending that everything is under control is even scarier.
