Christian rap is a musical genre that combines hip-hop with a religious message. He became most well-known in the United States, where as early as the late 1980s he was a kind of response to the aggressive and materialistic image of commercial rap. Over time, Christian rap gained recognition in other countries as well, especially in the French-speaking world. Artists used it as a means of missionary expression and cultural dialog between faith and modern youth. The genre's origins date back to the early 1980s. American artists, inspired by both gangsta rap and gospel, attempted to combine hip-hop rhythms with preaching content. In the 1990s, the genre developed on Christian radio stations and at festivals. Musically, Christian rap is close to classic hip-hop, but it stands out due to its specific themes and emotional tone. The foundation consists of sampled beats, basslines, and minimalist synthesizers. The tempo most often varies from 80 to 100 beats per minute. Gradually, Christian rap began to be perceived not as a niche phenomenon, but as a full-fledged part of hip-hop culture. Artists in the genre have received critical acclaim, have been nominated for Grammy Awards and Dove Awards multiple times, and their releases have charted. Thanks to this, the genre was able to move beyond the church audience and become a form of cultural witness.
